What does I am a girl project look like practically?
Many girls in Uganda today continue to struggle every month to have access to sanitary pads and this limits their abilities to participate in different aspects of life and attend school regularly. Many of the re-settled children are always asking for the sanitary ware and due to this we saw it best to start a program that provides Sanitary pads in 2018. This idea was welcomed by former school teachers who joined forces with us to see that sanitary pads are provided so that the girls don't have to miss school. This being a challenge for so many young girls drove us to do better and find the best ways to supply the sanitary ware.
We always provide sanitary ware to the girls that can take them four months as each semester or term is comprised of three and half months or 4 months. We saw it best to provide sanitary ware for a full term before and after the girls join schools. We always leave a box of sanitary pads at school with teachers and for the community, just in case when a female needs one, they reach out to our representative and be served and sometimes be delivered to them. We saw that even communities with vulnerable groups struggle with the same challenge at times since it is comprised of young mothers as well. We took it upon ourselves to see that we manage to serve them as well and deliver sanitary ware at the start of the month as well.
Our Girls, Our Responsibility To See Change
“The lack of sanitary pads is perhaps one of the girl’s strongest barrier against many of the things she wants to achieve such as education, engagement among others. This continues to harden the lives of many girls in the different localities. In order to build and cherish our girls we ensure that they have what it takes them to be strong and stand firm in school and in communities where often serotypes continue to be a disadvantage to them.”
We always deliverer 3 - 4 packs for (we provide to the girls and vulnerable women) each student depending on what the semester/term months are. We ensure that the girls have enough pads and will not worry, fear, miss school due to the monthly shedding that they have to undergo. We often deliverer the ''Always" as it is the commonest type used and more affordable in most areas. The other types were mostly donated by friends.
"We believe now is the time to stand up for the rights of girls throughout Uganda."
